CUBEWORLD

Cubeworld is a strange geometric world that lies somewhere between the second and third dimensions. There is depth in Cubeworld, but it is always ambiguous. John believes that our depth perception is ambiguous and the only real difference between Cubeworld and our world is the lack of familiar context - "it is only our knowledge of things that allows us to see them".

"Although most of these paintings were started over 20 years ago, I found it easy to revisit and complete them. The question 'what makes a pattern visually interesting?' is timeless. Repetition is interesting because it creates emphasis and rhythm, but too much repetition is boring, like most wallpapers! Interesting patterns are in some sense figurative or pose a perceptive puzzle - the most interesting also have symbolic or deliberate meaning."
