It is remarkable how much complexity arises from the application of simple rules. This non-repeating pattern is derived from a semi-regular tessellation of squares and triangles - by simply replacing each line with a triangle, a simple repeating pattern becomes a much more interesting irregular tessellation of cubes and fishes.

The basic pattern was designed on a computer, printed out and copied onto tracing paper, traced onto thick watercolour paper and then painted with Liquitex artist-quality acrylics using square-tipped brushes.
