FLICKERING DEPTHS - 2005

Acrylic paint on 300gsm Bockingford paper, image size 74.5 x 44 cm, available framed in plain painted silver frame (overall size 104 x 81 cm) - limited edition giclée prints also available in sizes A1, A2 and A3.

It is remarkable how complexity evolves from the application of simple rules. This non-repeating pattern of two rhomboids is shaded with three colours so that similar colours don't touch (note that this rule means that it is sometimes impossible to use just two colours for a chequer pattern). The depth ambiguities are enhanced by the flickering and optical mixing of the primary colours.

The basic pattern was designed on a computer, printed and copied onto tracing paper, traced onto thick watercolour paper and then painted with Liquitex artist-quality acrylics using square-tipped brushes.
